Dr. Mohammad Kabir Hassan
Dr. Mohammad Kabir Hassan is a Professor of Finance in the Department of Economics and Finance at the University of New Orleans. He holds four endowed professorships, including the Hancock Whitney Chair Professor of Economics I and II, Hibernia Professor of Economics and Finance, and Bank One Professor in Business. He is the recipient of the 2016 Islamic Development Bank (IsDB) Prize in Islamic Banking and Finance and was selected as a Senior Fulbright Scholar for 2022–2023.
He earned a bachelor's degree in Economics and Mathematics from Gustavus Adolphus College and both a master's degree in Economics and a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Nebraska–Lincoln. Before coming to the United States, he graduated at the top of the national merit list in Bangladesh for both his Secondary School Certificate (1978) and Higher Secondary Certificate (1980).
Dr. Hassan's research and teaching span Islamic finance, corporate finance, investments, monetary economics, development finance, capital markets, macroeconomics, and international finance. He has served as a consultant to organizations including the World Bank, International Monetary Fund, African Development Bank, Islamic Development Bank, United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), Bangladesh Bank, and the Saudi Arabian Monetary Authority.
Throughout his career, he has held numerous academic leadership positions and professional appointments, including serving as president of several finance and economics associations, graduate program coordinator for the Ph.D. in Financial Economics at the University of New Orleans, and member of multiple international advisory boards.
Dr. Hassan is one of the world's most prolific finance researchers, with more than 555 scholarly publications, over 500 conference presentations, and hundreds of invited lectures. He has been recognized among the top 2% of cited researchers worldwide and has received numerous awards for research, teaching, and service, including a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of New Orleans Research Council.
He has supervised 67 doctoral dissertations, served as an external examiner for more than 50 additional dissertations worldwide, and many of his former students now hold leadership positions in academia, government, and industry.
In addition to his research, Dr. Hassan serves as Editor-in-Chief, Senior Editor, Associate Editor, or editorial board member for numerous international finance journals. He has also authored and edited dozens of books and textbooks, particularly in the fields of Islamic banking, Islamic finance, and sustainable finance.
His work has been featured by major international media outlets, including CNN, Reuters, Forbes, The Economist, BBC, NPR, Voice of America, CBS, NBC, and FOX. He has also served in numerous public and community leadership roles in both the United States and Bangladesh.
Dr. Hassan is married to Dr. Tahmina Hassan, a board-certified internist and geriatrician. They have two children, both Harvard University graduates, who have gone on to successful careers in finance and technology.
