Habiba Afridi is an independent researcher exploring how sharīʿa’s foundational moral-legal principles of economic life can clarify and address modern structural and institutional problems. Her work centers on sustained engagement with classical sources, especially the nuances of their legal reasoning and their continuing relevance to contemporary problems. Her entrepreneurial experience brought her into close interaction with Pakistan’s corporate sharīʿa-compliance regime and informed her interest in responsibility-displacing mechanisms, including insurance, and their broader anthropological implications. Her training spans traditional seminary training in classical Islamic legal texts through two iftāʾ programs, including one under Dr. Mufti Abdur-Rahman ibn Yusuf Mangera, built on a six-year ʿālimiyya program; training in the same textual tradition, but adapted to the methods of Western academia at Zaytuna College, Berkeley; and professional training in Islamic finance at INCEIF, Malaysia.
